Alexandria was founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great. Today it is the second largest city in Egypt after the capital Cairo. It lies on the Mediterranean coast and is Egypt's largest seaport. A racecourse existed in the 19th century, as illustrated by the photo from 1865, and members and stewards badges from more recent times are shown below. It was situated to the south-west of the temple at Serapis. There is clear evidence that this had once been a circuit that was used for chariot racing in Roman times at one of their circuses. As early as 267 BC the track was used for horse races and human running races in the time of Ptolemy I.
